Yorkshire Dales from York: Herriot Country and All Creatures Great and Small
Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors, the small-group Herriot and Yorkshire Dales day trip offers the clearer route and better value: eight hours from €70.31, with Masham, Grassington, Linton Falls and Bolton Abbey named in the itinerary. The All Creatures Great and Small tour lasts 8.5 hours and starts at €96.53; choose it when the series theme matters more than price.
Herriot history and television are different layers
James Herriot was the pen name of veterinary surgeon Alf Wight. His books drew on rural practice in Yorkshire. The modern television series uses Grassington as fictional Darrowby, while the original BBC series was filmed mainly around Askrigg. A tour can therefore combine the author’s wider landscape with screen locations, but those are not the same claim.
This distinction matters when reading “Herriot Country”. It may mean places associated with Wight’s life and stories, scenery that evokes the books, or locations used by a television adaptation. If one specific doorway or scene is important to you, check the operator’s current route before booking; filming and access can alter stops.
The small-group Herriot route
The eight-hour trip explicitly names Masham, Grassington’s Darrowby filming sites, Linton Falls on the River Wharfe and Bolton Abbey. That gives the day a useful structure: market-town and screen context, a short natural stop, then historic ruins and estate landscape. It is not simply eight hours at a television set.
At €70.31, it begins more than €26 below the themed alternative. Its 183 reviews are fewer, so the evidence base is smaller, but the itinerary is concrete. It suits first-time Dales visitors who enjoy the series without needing every stop to be tied to it.
The fully themed option
The 8.5-hour All Creatures Great and Small Yorkshire Dales tour presents the landscape specifically through the world that inspired Herriot. It currently has 263 reviews and a 4.8 rating. The higher price comes with a themed framing and half an hour more.
Choose it if the television series or books are the main reason for leaving York. If your priority is limestone scenery, villages and a first look at the national park, the lower-priced route already covers strong locations.
What a Dales day feels like
Both choices are full-day outings. Expect repeated short walks and vehicle sections rather than one long hike. Weather changes the character of the views, not necessarily whether the trip runs. Bring a waterproof layer and shoes suitable for paths, but do not assume demanding trekking unless the booking description says so.
Lunch and attraction entry can vary by itinerary. Do not infer that every named place includes paid admission or a meal; check the inclusions for your date. Likewise, ask the operator to confirm step-free access and vehicle arrangements if mobility is limited.
Our recommendation
Book the small-group Herriot day trip for the best balance of price, named stops and Dales scenery. Pay more for the fully themed tour when All Creatures Great and Small is the centre of the day. See other day trips from York if Whitby or the North York Moors appeals more.
