York Minster: Ticket, Tower Climb and How Much Time You Need

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

York Minster's Gothic stone façade and tall central tower beneath a pale sky

Allow about 90 minutes for York Minster, or close to two hours if you add the Central Tower. General admission covers the cathedral floor, Chapter House, Undercroft Museum, crypt and the Minster’s volunteer-led tours when available. The entry ticket currently starts at €23.84; always check the booking page for your date.

Which ticket do you need?

Minster-only admission suits most first visits. Officially, a standard adult ticket is valid for repeat sightseeing visits for 12 months, during normal opening times; separately ticketed events are excluded. The tower is an add-on with a scheduled departure and limited places. It is not included merely because you hold general admission.

Sightseeing normally starts later on Sundays because the Minster is a working cathedral. Services and special events can alter access at short notice. Check the official calendar on the day rather than building a tight itinerary around a generic opening time.

What the Tower Challenge involves

The Central Tower climb has 275 steps. You must be at least 8 years old, arrive 10 minutes before the booked climb and handle narrow passages and uneven steps. Trips are subject to availability and weather. There is no lift to the viewpoint, so this is not an accessible extension to the main visit.

The ascent itself takes roughly ten minutes for a steady visitor, but the scheduled group, narrow route, descent and time at the top make the add-on longer. Allow extra time beyond the ten minutes of climbing. Do not book it merely for a higher viewpoint if confined spiral stairs make you uncomfortable.

A useful 90-minute route

Start with the nave and stained glass, then move to the Chapter House before descending to the Undercroft and crypt. That order keeps the visual highlight at the beginning without skipping the archaeological story beneath the building. If a free guided tour is about to start, take it and let the route change; a guide adds more than rushing through a checklist.

Visitors interested mainly in architecture can be satisfied in an hour. Those who read the Undercroft displays and study the glass need closer to 90 minutes. Add the tower after the interior, not before, because a delayed arrival could cost the fixed climbing slot.

Children and access

Up to four visitors aged 17 or under enter the Minster free with one paying adult under the official admission policy, while tower climbers aged 8–17 need a tower ticket. Conditions can change, so verify them when booking. The main cathedral has an access guide and staff invite visitors to discuss individual needs in advance. That does not extend to the 275-step tower.

Is the tower worth it?

Yes on a clear day if you are comfortable with narrow stairs and want a roof-level view of the walls, rivers and old centre. Skip it in poor visibility, with limited mobility or when your York day is already crowded. The Minster interior is the essential visit; the tower is an optional physical experience. Book York Minster admission first and confirm the tower time separately.
