York Ghost Tour: Ghost Bus, Ghost Walk or Deathly Dark – Which Is Worth It?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 6 min read
Choose the Ghost Bus if you want a seated comedy show with sightseeing; choose the Deathly Dark Tour if you want the strongest mix of walking, stories and dark humour. A traditional ghost walk suits visitors who care more about narrow lanes and local storytelling than theatrical effects. None is an investigation of supposedly haunted buildings: these are evening performances rooted, to different degrees, in York’s history.

Ghost Bus: performance first, walking second
The Ghost Bus is York’s comedy-horror theatre on wheels. Its operator describes a 75-minute nonstop circuit, traffic permitting, passing York Minster and Clifford’s Tower. Departure is from bus stop RE outside York station; the operator requires you to arrive 15 minutes before the start because the bus cannot wait for latecomers. There is no toilet on the bus.
This is the easiest choice after a long day on foot. You see more of the city without another 90-minute walk, and the conductor’s performance is the point. The trade-off is distance: a bus cannot create the same intimacy as standing in a dark snickelway while a guide tells one carefully paced story. The old Routemaster is also not wheelchair accessible. The operator publishes separate rules for children on its booking page; check those current conditions and judge the comedy-horror tone for the child yourself.
Deathly Dark: the strongest all-rounder
The Deathly Dark Tour lasts 1.5 hours and combines a walking route, historical material, spooky stories and black comedy. At €17.88 it starts below the bus and carries a 4.8 rating from 1,350 reviews, the same score as Shadows of York and above the Ghost Bus’s 4.4. That does not prove every visitor will prefer it, but it makes it the safer recommendation for a first ghost walk.
Walking is also its advantage. York’s medieval street pattern does much of the atmospheric work, and a guide can stop in places a bus merely passes. Wear shoes for uneven paving and bring a waterproof layer: the value drops quickly if cold rain makes you stop listening. If someone in your party cannot stand and walk for 90 minutes, the bus is the more practical choice.
Shadows of York: choose it for storytelling
Shadows of York is also a 1.5-hour walk, but its promise is concentrated on ghost stories and horrible history rather than a vehicle or large technical effects. It is the least expensive of the three at €16.68 and has a 4.8 rating from 418 reviews. Choose it when the voice and timing of a storyteller matter more than covering many landmarks.
The smaller review total is not a reason to dismiss it. It simply gives less evidence than the thousands of reviews behind the Ghost Bus. Conversely, the bus’s larger review count does not make it the best walk; it is a different kind of evening.
Which one should you book?
- Tired legs or unreliable weather: Ghost Bus.
- First visit and one evening only: Deathly Dark.
- Atmosphere and spoken stories above spectacle: Shadows of York.
- Young children: check the exact operator rules and the child’s tolerance for darkness and macabre jokes before booking.
- Limited mobility: confirm access directly; the vintage bus is not wheelchair accessible, while a walking tour involves old paving.
Our recommendation
For most first-time visitors, book the Deathly Dark Tour. It costs less than the Ghost Bus, lasts slightly longer and uses the old streets rather than treating them as scenery through a window. Pick the Ghost Bus instead when sitting down is a benefit or when theatrical comedy matters more than walking. See the wider choice on our York ghost tours page.
